Setting up DC fast charging at a fuel station or highway site
A practical field perspective.

What fuel station owners, dhabas and highway food courts should check before investing in DC fast charging.

Engineering note

Decisions that improve delivery.

01

Start with the traffic, not the charger

Look at how many EVs pass the site today, which routes they use and how long drivers already stop for food or rest. A highway stop where people spend 30 to 45 minutes eating is a natural fit for DC charging. The charger works best where drivers already want to stop.

02

Power is the main investment

DC fast chargers need a large and stable power supply. Many highway sites need a new HT connection or a transformer, which takes the most time and money. Check the nearest substation, line capacity and connection cost early, before finalising the number of chargers.

03

Plan the forecourt properly

Leave space for vehicles to enter, charge and exit without blocking fuel pumps. Plan the canopy, lighting, signage, bollards and cable routes, and keep fire and emergency access clear. Plan for one or two more chargers later so that you do not need to dig up the site again.

04

Uptime and payment decide repeat customers

Drivers remember a broken charger. Choose chargers with reliable after-sales support, app or UPI payment, and remote monitoring so faults are seen quickly. An AMC with scheduled checks keeps the site earning.

05

One team, survey to switch-on

APP infra supplies DC chargers from Exicom and Bolt Earth and handles the HT and LT works, civil works, approvals and commissioning for highway and fuel station sites across South India.
